Romania has been a renowned spa country since Roman times and today you can choose between several centres throughout the country, practicing the whole range of cures under modern conditions. Spa tourism is an important part of the Romanian tourist industry. Mineral and thermal waters, mud with therapeutic qualities, moffetes (natural jets of carbon dioxide), a temperate climate and the Romanian Black Sea coast – these are all reasons why spa tourism has flourished in Romania. With about 30 thousand accommodation places, the spa health resorts have about 20% of Romania‘s accommodation capacity. Spa treatment has a long history in Romania, being one of the first countries in the world to develop a scientific society of balneology and climatology. Nowadays, Romania has more than 160 health resorts that provide relief for many medical disorders and illnesses including respiratory, heart, stomach, endocrine, nervous diseases as well as metabolism, gynecological and nutrition disorders.
Romania is very rich in mineral resources, as the thermal, the sulfurous or salted waters and springs, the natural mud. The salt-mines, the ozone rich mountain air are other healing natural factors found here. The healing effect of all these natural resources has been scientifically proved and they are known from ancient times.
