Areas and Resorts

First discovered by ancient Romans, Hercules Spa (Baile Herculane) and Calimanesti-Caciulata Spa, from where Napoleon III himself used to take mineral water, are very famous these days. These twin resorts of Calimanesti and Caciulata heal disorders of the digestive tract and kidneys in the elegance of Belle Époque balneary pavilions, combined with totally up-to-date treatment centres. There are numerous health resorts in the Carpathian Mountains. Tusnad, north of Brasov, situated by a calm and picturesque lake, is important for bicarbonated and gaseous mineral waters and mofettes for treating cardio-vascular diseases.

Hercules Spa (Baile Herculane) is the oldest health resort in Romania, known since the Roman times, when it was called “Ad aquas Herculis sacras” (its documentary attestation as a resort dates back to A.D. 153), for the therapeutical effects of the sulphurous, sodic, calcic, magnesian, oligomineral thermal waters, that are slightly radioactive, used both in internal and external cures. Given the high temperature of the mineral waters (38-60°C) and the varied mineralization (3166-7426 mg), their physiologic action is complex and the therapeutical value - matchless.

Another important spa resort is Slanic-Moldova, an all-season resort of national importance, with a slightly excitant intramontane-depression climate, with clean air rich in resinous aerosols and negative ions. The resort of Slanic-Moldova is renowned for its springs of carbonated, bicarbonated, slightly sulphurous, chlorided, sodic, hypertonic, hypotonic and certain oligomineral waters discovered in 1801. The first chemical tests of these waters were done in 1852 and after 1877 the first balneal facilities were introduced. The therapeutic qualities of the waters here have been confirmed in the course of time by the medals won at the international exhibitions in Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main experts comparing them to the mineral waters of Karlovy Vary, Vichy or Aix-les-Bains.

Baile Felix is another spa resort where numerous mineral springs with thermal waters (20-48°C), oligothermal, radioactive, sulphurated, calcic, sodic, bicarbonated waters have been discovered next to the fossil sapropelic mud. The soothing effect of the waters on articular and muscular pain and on various rheumatic neuralgias accounts for the fame of cures in the resort for the treatment of inflamatory rheumatic diseases (rheumatic polyarthritis, rheumatoid spondylitis, conditions after acute articular rheumatism), degenerative (spondylosis, arthrosis, polyarthrosis, lumbar sciatica) and abarticular rheumatic diseases (tendonitis, tendomyositis, scapulohumeral perriarthritis etc.), central and peripheral neurological disorders (hemipareses, parapareses etc.), gyynecological diseases (chronic metrosalpingitis, minor pubertal or menopausal disorders), post-traumatic conditions (after operations on articulations, muscles and bones, after fractures, sprains, luxations etc.), endocrinological disorders etc. The resort boasts modern treatment establishments equipped with facilities for baths of warm mineral water in tubs and pools, kinetotherapy in pools with thermal mineral water, applications of warm mud, physiotherapy, inhalations and aerosols etc., which provide optimal conditions for treatment also in the cold season of the year.
