Rural Tourism

Rural tourism allows you to discover the wonderful countryside and people of Romania, with its array of cultural treasures and diversified wildlife. Few places in the world have retained their original customs, folk costumes, traditional crafts and tools. In Romania you can admire unspoiled countryside where the traditional rural civilization is still alive. Discover the northern provinces of Maramures or Bucovina with their old handicrafts, friendly people, horse or oxen-drawn carriages. In the small towns and villages people have changed their lifestyle very little over the years. Usually, in the rural areas you will find numerous guest houses that offer interesting cultural programs set up to discover the local customs and traditions or to learn certain crafts.

The offer of the guest houses and rural guest houses has been constantly improving. The tourist offer also has cultural programs set up to discover the local customs and traditions or to learn certain crafts. There are also ecological programs , of local nature exploration. Some of the rural guest houses even have skiing sessions on offer.

Romanian folklore is probably the most varied and traditional in the whole of Europe, so many experts say. You will be captivated by the beauty of the regional costumes which you may see passing through villages near Sibiu , in the Apuseni Mountains or Maramures. Transylvanian folk music and dancing is well known abroad. The "Doina", a distinctively ballad, gives expression to a wide variety of feelings whereas dances like "Invartita" or "Fecioresti" demand great virtuosity.

One of the most famous regions for rural tourism is the Rucar-Bran pass, the birthplace of rural tourism in Romania. Tourists can also do alpine skiing. There is a ski slope in Bran, provided with ski-lift and night floodlighting. Apart from skiing facilities proper, sleigh and even ATVs were made available. A journey to Bran also offers you the possibility of tasting the specific traditional food: the traditional Romanian plate (polenta, ham, spiced cottage cheese made in Bran by the peasants, onion, home-made sausages, bacon, mosaic salami) accompanied by the famous Romanian "ţuică".

It would be such a pity for travelers to Bran or Brasov not to pay Rasnov a short visit. A tour of the fortress with the same name and a cup of tea will help you see the true beauty of the spectacular view of Tara Barsei, while the museum the Fortress hosts can easily take the visitor in a snapshot trip back in time.
