One of the most visited places in Romania - the Danube Delta - is firstly a natural reservation. The Danube Delta offers some of the best ecological stays in Europe and is the only river delta in the world to be protected as a biosphere reserve, with over 580,000 hectares of preserved wetlands and over 5,000 species of flora and fauna. Local fisherman, who serve as tour guides, are experienced in navigating the Delta’s channels by motor or oar and are also knowledgeable birdwatchers. Be certain to learn about ecological tour guides (the Biosphere Reserve Authority is a good place to start: see sidebar) before going. As tourism in the Delta increases, so does the number of tour operators who do not always respect the same ecological approaches to the Delta.
The Danube Delta offers its fantastic diversity of animals, plants and birds, large views of these lands, with their people, traditions, monasteries, ancient ruins and landscapes. Suffice it to say that the three routes of migratory birds from Europe, Asia and Africa pass through Danube Delta where suddenly there is this extraordinary image of a paradise where man had the privilege to live at the beginning of the third millennium, close to his winged friends, the birds.
Bird watching, wildlife and nature tours for passionate travelers in the greatest and largest European heaven for birds. Hundreds of rare species of birds, animals and plants are waiting for you living free in large, wild and beautiful landscapes. 4000 square kilometers of reeds, marshes and shifting lands, a magnificent territory designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reservation unique in Europe. The Danube Delta also boasts 1.200 species of plants, among which the water lilies benefit from the status of monuments of nature.
The white egret, the bearded vulture, the spoon bill, the roller, the ordinary pelican and the curly pelican have been declared monuments of nature.Over 170 bird species breed here, including 60% of the world’s population of pygmy cormorant, sometimes 90% of the European breeding population of white pelicans and more than 150 pairs of dalmatian pelicans.
