Romania is one of the few countries of the world that has a millenary tradition in viticulture. The archeological discoveries made in our country certify traces of wine growing activity of over five thousand years. With the help of practical experience gathered by generations of cultivators specific assortments of each vineyard were created. Their fame grew over the centuries due to the grape quality but mostly to the refinement of the obtained wines, being known and appreciated by many European courts over the time.
Blessed with one of the most suitable natural settings, Murfatlar Vineyards is situated in the South-Eastern part of Romania, between the Danube and the Black Sea, in the centre of the Dobrogea plateau. The vineyard stretches across a surface of more than 3000 ha. Several elements such as: continental climate, diverse territory the vineyard covers, the favorable influence of the Black Sea offer the perfect climate to produce a large variety of quality wines.
The Murfatlar vineyard was first mentioned in the writings of the Latin poet Ovidiu. The vineyard is renowned for its sweet wines made of grapes whose contents are highly sugared as they are reaped after they have dried up. The sorts of wines produced by the Murfatlar vineyard: Pinot gris, Sauvignon, Italian Riesling, Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot, one of the Murfatlar vineyard traditional wines, is red, semidry and very popular amongst Romanians. It has an intense red color, a floral characteristic bouquet and a good evolution when grow old (especially if kept in an oak barrel).
