Timely reservation is necessary
If you like to take your pet along on your Lufthansa flight, please notify us when you make your booking but at the latest 24 hours before the departure date by contacting our Lufthansa Reservation Offices or tell our Lufthansa Airport Ticket Teams in person.

Entrainment of small dogs and cats into the passenger cabin
You may take a dog or cat into the cabin, if the weight of the animal (including transport container) does not exceed eight kilograms. The animal has to be kept in a box measuring not more than
55 x 40 x 20 cm. You may use your own transport box if it has the necessary measurement and is watertight. In addition, Lufthansa offers you a "Pet Box" at the check-in counters free of charge.

Entrainment of larger animals in the cargo hold
Animals that can not be transported inside the cabin will be transported by Lufthansa in appropriate containers in an air-conditioned area of the cargo hold. You may use your own transport container for your animal if it complies with the respective IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations. In addition you can purchase containers in different sizes at Lufthansa Cargo. The size has to ensure that the animal can stand up straight and has sufficient space to move. For further information please simply contact a Lufthansa Cargo office (in Germany: +49 - 1 80 - 57 47 100).

Tariffs for the transport of animals
The transport of cats and dogs in the passenger cabin on inner-German flights are free of charge as long as the free baggage allowance is not exceeded. When flying to destinations outside of Germany animal are considered excess baggage. Animals which may not be transported inside the cabin are categorically calculated as excess baggage.

On European and long-haul flights (apart from Canada, Mexico and the USA) the tariff for the animals is calculated based on the weight concept. On flights to Canada, Mexico and the USA the piece concept applies. The animal does not count as one of the free piece of baggage but will calculated in any case as an additional piece. Here you find detailed information on the calculation of fees for excess baggage:
